What is the nasal cycle?
It is normal for one side of the nose to feel more open than the other. The nasal cycle is a recurring pattern in which tissues on alternating sides become slightly more congested and decongested. A changing sense of openness does not automatically mean something is wrong.
Nose breathing vs mouth breathing
Nasal and oral breathing are not competing systems where one must be used every minute of the day. Your body can switch between them depending on airflow demand, congestion, anatomy, sleep state and exercise intensity.

Can nasal breathing reduce snoring?

Does nasal breathing improve athletic performance?
The answer is more nuanced than many online claims suggest. Nasal breathing may feel comfortable during warm-ups, recovery sessions, walking, low-intensity running and some steady aerobic work. However, during harder efforts, breathing through both the nose and mouth is a normal response that helps meet rising ventilation demands.
Studies of external nasal dilators and exercise have produced mixed findings. Some individual studies report lower perceived breathing effort or changes in physiological measures, while systematic reviews have not established a consistent improvement in maximum oxygen uptake, heart rate, perceived exertion or race performance for healthy people.
Running
During an easy run, nasal breathing can function as a practical intensity check. When it becomes difficult to maintain without strain, your pace may have moved beyond an easy conversational effort. This is a coaching cue rather than a medical threshold.
Strength training
Controlled breathing between sets can help an athlete settle their breathing before the next effort. During heavy lifting, breathing and bracing strategies should match the exercise, load, experience level and advice of a qualified coach or clinician.
HYROX and high-intensity events
HYROX combines running with demanding functional stations. Nasal breathing may be useful during the warm-up, transitions or recovery periods, but exclusive nasal breathing is unlikely to be practical during the most intense sections for many competitors.
Team sports and combat sports

How do nasal strips and magnetic nasal strips work?

Traditional adhesive nose strips

Quiet breathing reset
Sit comfortably. Relax your jaw and shoulders. Inhale gently through the nose and exhale without forcing the breath. Continue for one to two minutes.
Longer, relaxed exhale
Breathe in gently through the nose, then allow the exhale to last slightly longer than the inhale. Keep the breath soft rather than taking very large breaths.
